BBC Studio Clock - Favag

I’ve wanted one of these clocks for ages and finally one came up for sale - it was in poor condition and I’ve got it to an acceptable state.

The dial surround is dented and the seconds hand is a modern replacement but the closest I could get for the time being. I made up the ‘ON AIR’ sign.

I’m running it full time to test my masterclock system and it is completely silent which is amazing. It is a very high quality Swiss alternating polarity mechanism running in an oil bath to keep it even quieter - plus it never needs oiling but it does need a service and some of the oil on bearing surfaces gets degraded and starts to stick. The lamp behind the sign is a 12v LED, with a switch to turn it on and off, and the whole thing runs from a 12v plug in power supply.

Here is the Favag mechanism in it’s enclosure. The oil comes about half way up the enclosure just enough to cover most the mech and not reach the hour/minute/seconds hand shaft. There is a breather hole at the top inbetween the two connections.

The clock should be kept upright otherwise it will leak out of the hand shaft hole or the breather on the back.

This mechanism is running using an EC5AP impulse driver to give 24v alternating polarity at 1 second intervals.
